What was that?
Wynter turned to the door. He was sure he had heard some stange noise from the outside.
It could have been something unimportant. He had wanted to ignore it, but his mind wandered to what could happen if it were somebody, hurted, alone, waiting for a rescue.
Wynter couldn't sit still. Being a doctor as he was, he felt that he held the responsibilities to those around him.
Which in this case, those being the entire ship, and whoever was out there making the noise.
Wynter peeked outside. Lights were on, and he saw nothing unsual. He walked out of the room and went along the corridor. It was so peaceful that he grew suspicious of the situation. If there really was nothing, then what exactly was that noise he heard?
He shook his head and decided to push it all to the back of his mind. It could have been anyone, doing some nocturnal activities, which was not, in any way, his business.
Even Wynter himself was annoyed by the fact that he was such a worrywart.
More than that, he felt a little hungry.
He headed to the dining room, thinking it wouldn't be too rude to ask for a little something to fill his empty stomach for the time being. He reached the destination, but it looked unexpectedly deserted, and strangely quiet.
He continued walking to floor C, with the thought that 1st class passenger must be well taken care of, so it should be easier to find some crew to help him out if he went there.
And he was right.
"Eh? Sir, what can I possibly help you with?"
A man in the uniform called out to him. The expression of the man with spectacles was so strange that Wynter had to suppress his urge to snicker. It wouldn't have been nice if he did.
He started talking to the crew, who was nice enough to hear out his request. He noticed there were people, other than him, who had not look like they belonged here, on the luxurious floor for the 1st class passengers. He joined in a group of conversation to learn that they also heard strange noises and decided to come out and check.
He felt a little assured knowing he wasn't hallucinating. But having this many people hearing the noise? It might not be something as little as he thought it would.
The ship tilted sideways. The floored moved and he almost bumped into the person next to him. Good thing he hold on to the rail quite in time.
There came again the strange noise. Though this time it was as if sometihng was going to break.
He looked around. Everyone was quiet. Curiousity mixed with fear was shown quite explicitly on everyone's face. Knowing he couldn't have been alone one this, Wynter spoke up and suggested,
"How about we go check that out?"
Everyone went along with his suggestion and headed toward where the sound came from. With one turn at the corner, a long passage way was seen. Nothing was unsual as far as he could see. The other end was too far off, he couldn't tell what lay further than that.
People started talking how it was a waste of effort to come and check it out. He couldn't argue since nothing strange was seen.
But they all had heard the sound. Didn't they?
As when he was deciding on what to do next, a girl, later introduced as Alicia Aeinsworth, spoke up.
"Erm... Excuse me," Seeing that everybody had looked her way, she continued bashfully, "I'm sure everone heard the sound coming from this direction. That's why we came all the way here to check it out, but there's nothing particularly unusual. Don't you think it's a little odd?"
She looked st everyone with eyes that resembled those of a kitten.
"Why don't we stop and talk things over a little?"
She had a point. Making a move with out knowing the situation wasn't wise.
They gathered in group and started talking about what they had seen so far, if those incidents were related to the sound in any way at all.
Then suddenly something rapidly went pass by.
Alicia was tripped over by something. Trying to stay upright, she pulled another man, later introduced as Aillard, down together.
A girl standing not too far off from him looked terrified. She was starring at the back of those two who just fell down, so he looked that way too. A shadow of something, too big to be a man, ran pass by again, tripping over the girl, who grabbed another two girls down with her.
While he still couldn't quite grip the situation, another two, was bumped by the mysterious figure and fell onto the ground.
Something was very wrong.
Wynter tried his best to control himself though fear is taking over his head. He noticed that 'that thing' had gone over in the corner and hid itself in the shadow.
They all stood in silence, alarmed, when a man broke the tension.
"Everyone please, clam down" The man middle-aged man adjusted his spectacle and carefully obsereved the situation then turned to the crew, "Is there anything other than passengers on board?"
A boy, without waiting for an answer, also looked to the crew and said "You are a staff right? Good staff takes care of passengers, so lead the way, GO!!!"
He pushed the staff to go check out the mysterious shadow. Andrew lightly hit the unfortunate crew on a shoulder in encouragement, "No worries, young man! We're on your side!"
The staff led the way to the dark corner where something was supposedly standing.
Then suddenly he was hit and sent flying backward to where he was standing. Wynter gasped. He knew he should be examining the staff. He knew he should be caring for the injured. But terror was taking over his head, and he found himself unable to move, or look away from the shadow. Then it moved slowly forward into the light, showing itself.
The only reasonable response that came to his mind was to run. The horse chase after everyone so fast. While running breathlessly, he saw someone tripped and fell to the floor.
Wynter turned back in hopes he could help, only to see the horse had stomped right on the girl.
He was shocked, feet rooted to the floor, eyes fixed on her face. She lay there, eyes closed, motionless, like a doll.
Wynter felt his breath caught in his throat, his heart beting fast. That moment, he had forget that he should be running away for his life.
He told himself that she is not 'her'. No.
A picture of a young lady, someone more familiar, laying still on the floor, blood-soaked, flashed to his mind.
He slowly reached the locket kept in his pocket, and clench his sweaty palm around it tightly.
He wished he'd stop seeing that in his head. He wondered how come even when someone had left, the images of the person could still burn so deep in the memory of the one who remained.
He was startled at the shout of someone. He tore his gaze away from the girl and saw a middle-aged man, supposedly the one who shouted, looking relieved when the horse had finally calmed down. It seemed that the man had somehow manage to stop the cause of the ruckus.
Wynter sighed in relief and rushed to check the girl's condition to see that the doctor was already there before him.
Though it was probably only an hour or so since he left his cabin, tonight had been already too long.
- Wynter was so nosy such a worrywart that he couldn't sit still when he heard the noise from the outside
- He was the one who suggested going check out where the noise came from, only because he knew it wasn't alone on that.
- Though usually dependable, he was certainly useless in th emergency, getting frightened and all (lol)
- Seeing the girl (Silva) lying on the floor, not moving, the picture of his wife, Alysia, came to his mind. (The last image that he had of his wife was her lying on the floor, blood-soaked and not anymore breathing.)
- He didn't see exactly how Andrew stopped the horse. (being deep in thought and all)
